We went to the Metropolitan Opera one evening during the first week of October. Going to the Met was another “must do” things in NYC, and we are so glad that we have this spectacular evening to remember.
We chose “Cosi Fan Tutti” by Mozart based upon a recommendation from our opera-expert friends, Carol and Jim Salbenblatt. The opera was conducted by James Levine who was just returning to the Met after a two year absence following a serious fall. The opera had premiered this season just a week earlier, and the NY Times called the production “…glowing, crisp and buoyant” and the reviewer said, “I don’t think I have ever heard a more vibrant, masterly and natural performance than this.” We were ready for a spectacular evening!
We first had dinner at Lincoln, the sleek and modern restaurant at Lincoln Center. Our table faced the pool, so we had a good view of people strolling the plaza or attending the various performances at the Center that evening. Our dinner was the finest we have had in New York and service was impeccable. In addition, the waitstaff was extremely friendly.
The opera house was dazzling in light. The bubbling fountain in front of the Met was lighted, and it was a perfectly warm evening to relax outside and inside. The opera house is spectacular in design with six levels of patron boxes on the sides. The gigantic chandeliers were sparkling. Our seats were on the main floor, P19 and P21, just a bit to the left of center and were perfect….we would choose them again. The house was full, and the crowd warmly welcomed the conductor. The opera was light and funny and included six main performers each with a stunning voice. The work was translated (either into English or German) on the back of the seat in front of you, so it was easy to follow if one wanted to know what words were being sung. Almost four hours later the last curtain fell, and then there was a standing ovation and many curtain calls. No one wanted to leave!
We slowly drifted out of this maginificent place and were so grateful for this opportunity. We walked around Columbus Circle and caught the 57th Street east/west bus towards home, arriving well after midnight. A perfect New York evening in every way!
